Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) Study

Folwell Components

Why is this study important?

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a common virus that affects the lungs and breathing passages. Older adults are at greater risk than young adults for serious complications from RSV because our immune systems weakens when we are older. Each year, an estimated 60,000-120,000 older adults in the United States are hospitalized due to RSV infection.

When an older adult gets an RSV infection, it can lead to serious conditions such as:

  • Pneumonia (infection of the lungs)
  • More severe symptoms for people with asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD, a chronic disease of the lungs that makes it hard to breathe)
  • Congestive heart failure (when the heart can’t pump blood and oxygen to the body’s tissues)

Long-term, severe RSV infection can result in persistent respiratory symptoms and worsen chronic health conditions. By learning more about these long-lasting effects, we hope to find better ways to protect yourself and your loved ones.

Who can join?

We are looking for adults (18+) who have had RSV in the last 6 months. We are especially interested in individuals who are at higher risk for severe RSV infection, but this is not a requirement for participation.

Basic eligibility criteria

We are looking for participants who:

  • are at least 18 years of age
  • had a confirmed RSV infection in the last 6 months
  • are able to undergo MRI scanning

We are particularly interested in individuals who are at higher risk for severe RSV infection, such as:

  • older adults, especially those 65 years and older
  • adults with chronic heart or lung disease
  • adults with weakened immune systems

Interested? Check your eligibility.

What happens if I join the study?

If you decide to participate, study activities include:

  • Study questionnaires
  • Nasal swab
  • MRI scan
  • Blood draw

This study has 2 study visits that are 6 months apart. Each visit will take about 2 hours to complete. The visits will take place at the University of Minnesota.

Remember, your participation in the study is completely your decision, and you are free to leave at any time.

Is compensation provided?

Yes, participants will be paid after each study visit. Public transportation or parking costs will also be provided.

You will not be responsible for the cost of any study procedures. If you decide to stop the study visit for any reason, you will receive partial payment for your time.

What is RSV?

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a common respiratory virus that usually causes mild, cold-like symptoms. Most people recover in a week or two, but RSV can be serious for older adults, especially for those chronic heart or lung disease.
